The Awalim Show A show was performed last Tuesday for Egypt and Syria. After the showing of some Syrian melodies, the Egyptian zaffa for brides that Awalim do at weddings was performed by the two singers Anisa and Nabaweya el Masreya and their band. The conference members suggested saving this Zaffa on one of the phonograph cylinders that the Gramophone company produces. They performed a “Bridal Procession” on the Oriental Music Institute theater in front of the countries delegates that participated in the Conference. The delegates showed their admiration and praised her and her band. This “[Bridal] Procession” was recorded on the gramophone company’s cylinders that were produced especially for the conference because of its content of shaabi [popular/traditional] melodies among the tabla and zaghareed, which she performs at every party that she is invited to work. [78rpm Recordings] (Awalim) at the Arab Music Conference I had the opportunity to hear samples of the (Awalim) records being made at the music conference by Gramophone Company featuring the famous almah the singer Anisa el-Masreya, her sister Nabaweya and the members of her band. I liked how the melodies were set on (the wahda [rhythmic mode]) and what increased their beauty is that they were composed of beloved popular melodies. It would be great if the Gramophone Company rushed to produce them and have them ready for listeners. [Excerpt from Art and sports celebrate the Sitting Feast (anniversary of King Farouk’s coronation) in Al-Ahly Club] …Then it was the moment that everyone was waiting for, which was the appearance of the movie star Nabawia Mustafa on the stage, showing the audience her graceful dance, which greatly impressed them, until most of those in the hall stood [transfixed], amazed at her softness, lightness of movements and speed in performing her dance. One of the most beautiful things we heard while she was performing her dance, was that when one saw the people in the hall, their necks were stretched out and their bodies were raised so that they could follow Nabawia in her dance [without missing anything!]. One of them said: Man, the whole room was on their feet for this! Indeed, everyone in the hall remained on their feet until Nabawiyya finished her dance and left, while everyone clapped and asked for her return... Nabaweya Mustafa She is new to working in cinema, but she has been fond of it for a long time, and before playing the role of the heroine in (Marouf Al-Badawi), she appeared in a dance role in the movie (The Gatekeeper of the Building). She is an accomplished dancer and has a character suitable for Arab roles, which is why Professor Ibrahim Lama chose her to be the heroine of the film (Maarouf Al-Badawi), because the role was clearly made for her, and the success she had in it guarantees her a brilliant future in the the world of cinema. What's in a Signature? Her signature reveals to you the goodness of her heart and her naivety, but at the same time it indicates that she has a difficult temperament, as well as her vagueness and mystery. It is noted that her name refers to her love of extravagance, but she spends money for the sake of her elegance and good appearance, and you can understand from the intermingling of her two names that she is often overcome by shyness, therefore, she is not frank about many matters. This signature also indicates the intensity of her ambition. Source: Kolshei w Al Dunia Magazine no. 533 Date: Jan 22, 1936

[Contestant in the “Bride of the Beach” Pageant] 2 - Nabaweya Mustafa We only saw her in one movie, but her artistic life was based on dancing before she appeared on the white screen. She is distinguished by a rare lightness of spirit, a lithe body, two captivating eyes, and limbs with a surprising flexibility which obey her in her dances, so that she reaches [towards] the limits of creativity, and lovely dark skin which enhance these virtues. She is calm in her nature, shyness often overcomes her, and she lacks the audacity that is required by every artist to open before her the doors of fame and success. Her share of accomplishments is acceptable, but if she overcomes her shyness and hesitation, her share of success [fame] will be greater.
